I can't upgrade from 1.20.1 to anything newer. Appears to be a java issue.

I migrated to a proxmox container running bookworm since I had a machine that I could repurpose. Cannot figure out how to do this correctly. I have removed mods and tried a various amount of things but when I try anything I get a message about java...

MC 1.20.1-1.20.4 needs Java 17. Minecraft 1.20.5 and above needs Java 21. All other versions may cause errors.

For Minecraft <1.17, Java 11 is recommended.

Minecraft 1.17 won't start without Java 16 (or newer).

Minecraft 1.18 won't start without Java 17 (or newer).

Minecraft 1.20.5 won't start without Java 21 (or newer).

as Clyde said you'll need to use java 21 as a mod of yours requires it
had a question yesterday where that was the exact issue

Info been around in ac for like ages without anyone stating that so i find that strange
never also really had that happen to me either so idrk. i just see java version a recommended or minimum
It's most common with modded servers. You'll start like 1.21.X in Java 23 in Java 21 compatibility mode or something, and a mod will just completely not work and be very cryptic about why. Downgrade to actual Java 21 and it magically works.
It's been that way for years.
The compat modes for modded servers are notoriously problematic.

good to know
Prolly doesn't affect Paper servers tho. Which I never run, so I wouldn't have noticed.

I swear I tried doing java too in the past but maybe I used the wrong one. I'll give it a shot. I appreciate the helpful information without looking through the same reddit threads lol
its a fabric server btw

thank you
@Bushtit its a fabric server btw
For modded servers, don't do latest. Do exactly the prescribed Java version, found here: https://minecraft.wiki/w/Tutorial:Update_Java#Why_update?
@Bushtit thank you
No sweat. Seeing what we're seeing is useful for understanding things, I know.
aren't you on linux? I saw "systemd" in that log snippet at the top.
