I need someone who is knowledgeable with Folia to give me some guidance,

I’m a server owner and I’ve been editing for some time now, so my posts that advertise our server at time break 1 million views.

But our server that’s now on Folia begins to aggressively lag with anything past 100 players, I need some 1-1 help understanding how I can improve it and handle 250 or even 500 players at least. Seeing as folia boasts in perfect conditions 1000 250-500 seems logical.
Philippine Crocodile
the general rule of thumb and the simplies solution to scale is not to put all those players on a single server
sure, folia allows for a lot of players on a single instance, but only if players are like 2-3k blocks from each other. if you have limited world size, that's just not gonna work well
Asiatic LionOP
I see ok, we run a PVP server so people tend to do the strategy of tunneling and bidding underground. They definitely don’t aim to be near one another. Our current border is 10k x 10k this was just to encourage fighting a bit more.

But if to benefit from folia the border needs to be expanded that’s something I’m willing to do.
Philippine Crocodile
it would need to be expanded a lot
Asiatic LionOP
What’s your estimate?
Philippine Crocodile
you want groups of players to be more than 2k blocks away from each other
so let's assume 100 players, that's 20k minimum if they line up
and you're still stuck with the same issue as now if you decide to do an event in one spot
Asiatic LionOP
So if we want less lag with higher count we’re looking at 50k blocks as a start atleast?
@Philippine Crocodile so let's assume 100 players, that's 20k minimum if they line up
Philippine Crocodile
did I say 20k, that's a miscalulation
did not account for the players simulated chunks around them
add like 192 blocks + 20% for every player
assuming 6 simulation distance
reading what you said about the server, I don't think folia fits into this
Asiatic LionOP
Interesting, our server provider had us adjust render to 6 and simulation to 5.

And he split something from 16x16 to 8x8 mentioned something about grids
Ok then what would be our best pivot point here?
Philippine Crocodile
the cheapest and easiest to manage option would be to just have multiple world servers with sane player limit for each
Asiatic LionOP
Ok so they’re all still on the same world but it splits them up?
Philippine Crocodile
if you want the "same" world, you can do what donutsmp does, just decide on the sections of the map and load them up on separate servers and move players between them as the move around
but it would be way harder to load balance
Asiatic LionOP
I see, yeah I do really want to immerse all our players into one world.
So splitting into multiple doesn’t work with our play style vision
Philippine Crocodile
in general you should design gameplay after knowing technical limitations
to not run into the issue you're running into now
Asiatic LionOP
Yeah it’s my and my cohosts first time running something like this, so it’s been a learning experience as we’ve gone along.
So you think the best decision is to split our world into sections like DonutSMP, or we sacrifice player interactions a bit and increase the border by a very large amount.
