The only part I’m confused about is the command block section. I don’t really see why that’s necessary. Is that only so that it doesn’t show death count for offline players? I thought that wouldn’t be an issue if you displayed it via the tab.

That's also something I'm wondering about. I'm sure you can just create the scoreboard and display it in the tab list
