Hopefully a simple question, I'm hosting a server on quite an old version (b1.4) which I am using port forwarding to make available to friends of mine. I am very new to utilizing port forwarding, and am not entirely sure as to how it works (general gist, but not specifications).
Does whitelisting my server make it harder for potential bad actors to gain access to the PC which is hosting it? Or is port forwarding itself, regardless of potential bad actors' ability to partially or fully connect so the software utilizing the port forwarding (the server, of course), able to give them a way to break into my device? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

technically yes. to what extent is debatable.
Generally if you want a private server, you should ALWAYS have whitelist enabled regardless of what's happening

I tend to whitelist IPs instead of mc names, that is, if:
Your router supports conditional port forwarding, most don't
Your friends have a (relatively) static IP
