is r7 5700x enough for a 100 players ?

basically the title question. Our university club wants to self-host a minecraft server, smp style, we think that atleast ~50 players should be playing on a good day and possible 100 if we organize an event. The problem is funding, we need to file a request to student government with links to store pages of products we want to buy, but in our country compared to EU amazon or world-wide amazon prices are 10-60% higher for electronics such as computers and components. The options for CPUs are very limited here and I wonder will r7 5700x suffice for a possible 100 player server and how smooth/bad it will run ? I do not know the approximate budget but there is no options for am4 and building for am5 would be too expensive IMO, another option is intel CPUs but I did not check them yet

why would you request your uni to pay for a self host machine wouldnt it be more convenient to just convince them to get you a host instead

idk im getting off topic the cpu is good for that player count in my opinion as long as you optimise your server [papermc guide](https://paper-chan.moe/paper-optimization/)
and use chunky to preload your chunks
you should be fine

we were considering hosting but couldnt find the right or a good option, we felt like we would pay too much over 1-2 years

our clubs main activity is organising esports events and hosting minecraft server for this reason is acceptable I think, I was recruited because I had some experience in setting up servers but I did not work or setup servers for a more than 10 players

You’d probably be able to get a plan for around 20 dollars that would meet your demands

ye smth from pufferfish or any with new ryzen cpu will do good
esp if its events you can setup the server locally

1 time cost vs monthly payments is something to think of
a student gov wouldnt pay monthly for something because they need to keep track of it

Yeah that’s around 20 usd per month for 2 years
ive never gotten a student gov to pay for something so dont see the full picture

they pitch it to the school then they give you the funds for it if it goes good
