Ive never hosted a server before and know pretty much nothing. I have hella questions.
to start for a minecraft server where i would have anywhere from 5-20 people on the server what type of ram should i go for (considering there might be some larger farms/builds.)
Would i want to download certain mods for optimization? Would it also be easy to download freecam or schematic mods.
Also how does selfhosting work. Sounds like its harder to setup but cheaper. And if im selfhosting im assuming my computer has to be running for friends to log on to play. If that is the case is there a way around that?
If i go with a hosting company will that negate me having to leave my computer on.

also if theres a video that goes over most of my questions i would be more than willing to watch that.
Welcome to hosting! Its going to suffer but glad you are in the right place for it.
So lets go over a few things first.
What mod loader are you going to use?
Is this 5-20 people 100% they will get on and play at the same time?
Is there going to be a lot of mods, or just a few for QOL + optimizations.
If you do want to selfhost, you must understand these things.
1. the pc must remain on if you want the server to stay on.
2. you must NOT be behind CGNAT, or you cant host. (tl;dr basically dynamic ip that makes it hell to host)
3. I do not suggest selfhosting if you don't know the people you are giving your ip to.
For paid hosting.
1. The server can run theoretically 24/7 as long as it doesnt crash or you let it restart time to time
2. There are no losses if you go with the right host, there will be bonuses as they might have a automatic system to relaunch the server if it crashes, Automatic external backups, Dedicated threads + ram to the server.
3. they just cost money, we will go over that if you are interested.
When you mean you know nothing, do you mean this in the terms of both the hosting world na modded since you want to host for players. Or do you just not know about hosting for people, but know your way kinda around modded stuff

I know my way around modded stuff for the most part (have played with mods for a long time and also played mods before you could use the curse forge app and had to actually put it in a mod folder.)
I would be hosting for a group of friends and I would assume outside of when I first start the server up to like 3-5 people would be on at a time

And the mods would be just for optimizations and QOL but not like vein mine or anything like that really simple stuff like freecam and schematics import mods
Also if I chose to self host and my pc was off could someone else host the same server/world in my place?

For this part not really if they dont have access to the world or the files you run. It takes a while of work to get a system setup to send files, get files, and host them.
If you want a free host play.hosting is a pretty good choice for a handful of friends π

fair you wouldnt need much to run the server then
around 8gb ram if you were to chose a server host or allocate your own system specs to it

Whenever Iβve tried free host it normally ends up being laggy. What would paying for a host look like?
Dependent of the budget and the location in the world you are looking to get
but most of the time we highly reccomend checking out our verified hosts here #service-providers as they pass quite the tests to be on that platform.
They also have pretty great specs π

Is there any advice you would give to someone getting into hosting a server for friends

hmmm well depends what type your looking for.
Optimizations, mods to include, performance, etc

If you donβt mind I love reading/learning about stuff so as much as you are willing to share I would love to learn
I don't mind sharing, just sharing what matters lol
im basically an AI, if you don't specify Idk what to tell you lmao

Also advice on like what type of performance stuff I should look for. As in like I checked a couple hosts and some are like 2$ for a gig a ram others are 1$

What stuff should I know about optimization. Like preloading a world which mods to install
Chunky is the business standard. It does the job and does it well

The things that change based on ram to $ cost is the cpu. The higher the cost "Usually" the better the cpu.
While this can be VERY wrong, such as places like Bisect giving you horrible cpus for high premium costs

Good hosts will tell you what cpu you are buying before you buy the plan
