Hello admincraft. I am a former self-hoster who is trying to find a good server host. I can do the research and find out which host is right for me, but I just need some help with the numbers.
My server is a whitelisted server filled with my IRLs. There are 30+ people in the discord, but i would be shocked to see 15 people online at once. I'm planning on using Paper as that's what ive been using in the past for its simplicity and its plugin support. I run around 15-20 plugins, all mostly being quality of life / management things. I wouldn't call this server modded.
Do I really need 8GB? versus maybe 6GB? hell, do i need more than that? My self host setup was 12GB on an i7, and my TPS never once dipped below 20.
Also, a lot of hosts have budget plans, with weaker chips, but better $/RAM.
The last thing I'll mention is that money isnt a huge worry. I just wanna make sure I'm getting a good deal and I'm getting what will actually help.

OH and: are all VPS's expensive? i would love to have a VPS rather than a panel but they are all just a little too much or a little too little.

i7 what exactly?
there is a Large Large list of i7's to list off so more details would be good.
if you had 12gb and it was stable, 8gb would be perfectly fine, 6gb would be cutting it too close. Typically you want a little more just in case

Vps's are often more expensive then just a mc plan / game host

yeah again im happy to pay for a little extra to be nice.
whats your budget?
risoOP
well im splitting the cost between a handful of kind donors, so it's all just pocket change. i would like to buy something around 18/20 but am happy to go up to 30 if its really worth it
im really just curious about ram and cpus
like, would a 3950X be that much worse than a 9950X?
for my cases
Very

hmm okay
so a "budget" tier wouldnt be worth the price diff?
If you want host suggestions for mc plans, I have these
if it was me with that budget, id go with pebbles budget plan for $1/gb which is pretty nice. But they dont have dedicated threads just a shared host.
If you want dedicated prism / pufferfish would be good as they have dedicated threads and pretty good storage sizes

hmmm, a budget tier when done right is really good
sometimes budget plans are there for like "Velocity proxies" or a small get together server, not really too much for a 30-70 player count

yeah prism premium plan is one of my highest ranked hosts rn based on value for ram, storage, and single thread performance.
