what's better for self-hosting on a personal pc? dual-booting linux beside windows 11 and using windows 11 frequently while the server runs in the background? or running it solely on windows through like docker or smth
i unfortunately dont have a separate machine for hosting but i do have a pretty beefy pc
and i wont be doing much else during the 2 weeks im hosting for besides playing minecraft so i think i should be fine performance wise

How many people? Modded?
Public/Private?
risoOP
30+ server-wide, but historically only ever 11 online at once. private. plugin-heavy but just QoL stuff
You could just run it on the windows os ngl

PC:
i7-14700F (2.1GHZ (damn didnt realize it was that slow))
32gb ram

should i run it in a docker container? thats how ive been hosting my last 4 servers but im not familiar with how it interfaces w windows
That im not sure on
risoOP
it couldnt hurt, right?

If you're hosting a single server with max 30 but historically 11 concurrent max. No mods, just QoL plugins. And its all on one PC. No need to add WSL2/Docker overhead in this usecase. You can run it directly from Windows.
risoOP
overhead is a good point.
my other question regarding windows for hosting: how can i interface with it like i can with linux? like can i for instance ssh into it then cd into my project directory and vim my data file and git commit my change? do i just have to learn powershell?
im a windows noob basically
damn i think i just have to fully switch to linux

yeah ive used macos my whole life, a moderate amount of linux in the past two years, and i just got a pc for gaming
Asian black bear
fair enough, fortunately it's much simpler than that
no need to ssh, or use the cli for any of those things
risoOP
well... i actually much prefer cli over gui, and i need remote access
im away from home for days or weeks at a time
