What’s up guys! How we doin today.
Today, I am diving into server splitting. The biggest question that comes to mind is why would this be necessary? I know that it would greatly improve performance across splits depending on your hardware, but I guess specifically what do people usually add to a split when splitting a server? Just more content elsewhere? Maybe dimensions? Skyblock or creative? Is it possible/do people split off specific dimensions like the nether/end/custom?

If the plan you're paying for offers more than what one Minecraft server can make use of (extra threads, RAM, etc.), you would use server splitting to create multiple instances on one plan.
Most common usecase would be creating a 1GB Velocity proxy and having your "backend" servers like your Paper server (whether it be Skyblock, Creative, etc.) behind it.

Interesting. So mainly just dimensional splitting so your main server can run more efficiently?

By dimensional we're talking entirely different servers
Velocity acts as a proxy players connect to, and the traffic is routed to your "backend" servers (Skyblock, SMP, Creative, etc.)

Basically, one paper server can only handle so much at some point; no matter how many resources you throw at it, eventually, it will reach its limits. That is where server splitting comes in which can be in many different forms eg. splitting multiple game modes across different servers (which you should be doing anyways) or regionalized/dimensional splitting

Heard. Are their ways to create portals to said splits? Or would it never work like that?
I’m familiar with creating portals through datapacks, just curious on an in-depth idea of server splitting I guess
Southern African anchovy
Depending on what you're doing that should be possible
Iirc yes, there are plugins for that work.
Mods too.

You're basically just sending people to a different server doesn't matter how you trigger that

Cool! That’s really interesting. I’m going to read more on this and maybe attempt some things this weekend! Does anyone have any good forums/articles to read about server splitting?

May i ask why you need it?

Yes, very common

Well… right now I probably don’t at the moment. Was just going to have some fun and learn!

Yes. there are plugins that do that on what you need.

Also, you asked abt splitting different dimensions, e.g. world, nether, etc. You don't actually need multiple servers for that there are multiple server softwares that have different tick loops for each dimension
sorry for my grammar btw typing on a phone with fat fingers is hard lmfao
