I'm thinking of purchasing a server and interested to know if a vps would do any better than the servers in #service-providers or not. The server won't be that big (5-10 players) with around 10 paper plugins using aikar's flags with the region in AU or NZ. Self-hosting is not the best option as I can't port forward on starlink and playit has high ping because of where I live (New Zealand). I was looking into OVHcloud as a vps, although not everyone in this server likes it, but it supports AU region. Ubuntu is something I don't know at all but watching a YouTube tutorial or following a documentation can't be that difficult. If a vps is not that good as I think it is then I might go for pebblehost. Also if a vps is a good option should I install the pterodactyl panel, pelican panel or would learning commands on ubuntu be good enough? Budget is around 10-15USD.

Thanks for the responses, I will look into the oracle free tier as it does sound promising!
And the server performance will typically be worse. It's hard to find a VPS that's performant for minecraft at a cheap price from my experience
Oracle's free tier wont be THAT fast by any means, but I've seen it work fine for others in the past. Pebblehost is always a good go to especially with their budget options
I would personally still use pterodactyl. There's more resources on how to install it if you need help
their discord is super helpful too
It's always good to gain new skills by using linux though!

If you want to take the easy way out, use pebble. If not, use a VPS. Best of luck

Thanks for more info, it sort of sucks that only the good vps are limited in a region but I guess they are not dedicated for gaming. Setting up oracle cloud is taking awhile as my signup got rejected and I have made a support ticket so I will see how that goes.

OCI is really only good as as test machine for you to hone your admin skills, the CPU isnt designed for Minecraft so do not expect too much performance out of it.
in short terms, a VPS is a virtual machine. a minecraft server is similar. when you buy a standalone minecraft server it is put into a container. the differences? usually, buying a minecraft server is cheaper and gives you access to the host's panel, support, etc.

a VPS is harder to manage if you don't have linux experience. and like dawson said, there aren't usually VPSs that are performant for running game servers. and as PGDK said, linux is hard to learn and isn't a one day done type of thing.

my recommendation is to check out a minecraft host, and alongside perhaps learn linux. oracle free cloud is a good option for a little sandbox to help you learn, but I wouldn't use it run any minecraft servers.

IMO, your choice depends on your long term goals
if you want to be a barista for the rest of your life, don't learn linux
if you want to go into comp sci / cybersecurity, then learn it

Thanks so much for all the support, I will more look torwards a mc server host as I was too interested in a vps before. Sadly Oracle does not like me signing up to their website and didn't help during support. Pebble Host is a little bit more expensive as AU regions are premium only.

I don't really plan to have long term goals on the Minecraft server as it's just my friends and we all stop playing after a month. Hopefully there are more options in #service-providers later on for people like me in smaller regions and I would love to self host if playit ever makes a server in NZ.
