Hey everyone. So after looking through the setup.md website for recommendations on what system to put together i was going to be looking into something economical and on the used market.
I came across a listing which now is offering a discount $110 USD to the discount price of $84.22. It doesn’t have a drive, or the power adapter.
It’s for a hp pro desk 400 g5 mini pc that has a 9500T with 8GB of ram. I already have a m.2 ssd at home that I can use for this. I would be using this for a hybrid 1.12.2 SpongeForge server with 100+ mods and a player count average of 10-15, max 20.
Would this be a good buy? I could extend my budget at the max $150 but really do want to have it be at or less than $100.

looks like it has a Intel Core i5-9500T
not sure if it could handle the craft very well
The CPU would be worse, but 8 gigs of RAM will be crippling.

I mean if the ram is going to be the only issue I’m sure I can find something that has 16gb

I'm ngl, you'd probably be better off going with a host.
I get a bit of that vibe here.

And I’m trying to get away from that right now as I don’t want to be paying for subscriptions. If it ends up that I need to reevaluate my upfront cost and save up then so be it
Right so I have questions for you then.
The biggest one is why are you really doing this? Like is it just games? Do you want to get into IT and sysadmin and this is a reason to go down that path?
The reason for why you're even here will largely end up defining the value any of this really even has and all that.

Yes, right now I’m in college pursuing a computer science degree and I’m looking to get into doing homelab projects. But since I’m a college student funds aren’t the best of things right now even after working part time as well.
I was similar boat only with self education instad of formal.
I'd yolo and buy an actual server, maybe an R630 or something.
Next step would be building stuff more perf specific like higher performance Ryzen servers.

I don’t really have any space for a rack mount though
If I did I’d 100% would go that route. Maybe the max I can do a 10 inch rack situation, hence why I was looking at mini pc’s

The magic of rack servers is they're flat and will fit against a wall. :p
Everyone thinks you shouldn't just mount them vertically, and I agree it's a bit forbidden, but it works. :p
East European ShepherdOP
And if I want to expand on that?
I’m going to need room to actually mount it eventually
@East European Shepherd And if I want to expand on that?
That's a problem for sometime later. Personally at that stage I'd consider colo.
But it depends on a bunch of variables I can't define for you.

I’ll try and look into some options then based on your experience

Just be a bit aware of noise, heat, and power cost.
Almost universally rack server will spin the fans up to max if the intake heat gets to be too high, so you'll want to be tactical about your positioning and room venting.

Yeah I understand that part of it. That’s why I didn’t want something that uses a ton of power
