Hello!
I'm planning to open a cobblemon server in the (far) future to the public and I wanted to gather your opinions on the question whether it's you could self host a public server for let's say 100 people in the beginning or if it's better to host it via a hosting provider.
Currently I host a modded server (not cobblemon) with my friends on my mini PC that has 32gigs ram - only 24GBs are allocated to the server) as well as an i5-12Gen CPU and we've had about 8 players max join in. There was also quite a few mods. With cobblemon the otherhand it'll just be cobblemon, some addons for cobblemon as well as other QoL mods like JEI, Jade and the likes with Performance mods on top.
Thing is i'm not sure if my mini pc could handle it or not. I'm aware that when i self-host i have to pay for domain and reverse proxy and count in the risks of internet problems of my ISP if there will be any. Though for doing it at a hosting provider i'd have to pay a monthly fee and a domain.
Basically is what do you already use? Is my PC able to handle a public server on such a large scale?
What's your opinion?
I'm looking forward to your inputs!

Basically:
1. No, you do not selfhost a prod server ever, there's more than just resource limits at play, redundancy and uptime are real things.
2. You don't need 24 gigs of RAM in an overwhelming amount of cases, start at 8 and move up in 1GB increments if you need more.
3. Study up hard on tooling to run a server properly, it's not as easy as it looks, especially in prod.
4. Check out #buyer-chat and #service-providers for options for a host.
