Hey there. I'm on my way now to my storage unit to grab a spare PC to use as a minecraft server so me and my friends can finally get off a server hosting site. I have a few questions but I'm not sure if this is the place to ask:

-how imporant is CPU really? the PC im gonng piece together will be on an AM4 platform. I've got a spare AM5 motherboard laying around but was wondering if the performance gain is worth dropping another 350-500 on another CPU and some DDR5. Primary we're targeting a modded server with something like ATM9 where players can freely explore without lagging the rest of them, we had this issue a lot with shockbyte.

-Same as above but for RAM speed and SSD speed. I can throw more money at it but will it even make a percivable difference?

-are there any guides on how to set up a server from scratch? this'll be my first time and a lot of what I see on youtube is either outdated or just a long ad for a hosting service.

Cpu's are HELLA Important its the most important piece of hosting.
Having a high end single thread score monster of a cpu is what you need for MC to have a good time
Shockbyte can suck it btw, you got a bad host if you really want a better host #service-providers
Ram speed, SSD Speeds are more leeway.
Ram has to match with cpu ofc
Storage, can be gen 3+ Nvme's, they dont restrict you until you start abusing it.
There are tons of guides out there on starting a server from scratch, just depends what you will do with that spare pc. If you dont use it as a main pc install debian/ubunutu install pterodactyl and live life having fun
Repo, this is your candy do what you do good :salute:
how imporant is CPU really?
EXTREMELY. But AM4 is fine. A 5950X would be fantastic for a friends and family server, for example.

Same as above but for RAM speed and SSD speed.
RAM speed not at all. Capacity is more important. SSD speed is more important, but not critical. Any decently performance SSD, especially NVMe, will do well.

are there any guides on how to set up a server from scratch?
Yes, but what platform? Paper? Forge/Fabric? Something else?

ahhh ok
Oh gosh, you used Shockbyte. Yeah, they're known around here for being absolute dogshit for performance.
@Tomistoma How much "guide" do you need? We talking everything from Proxmox, to OS, to how to install Java, etc? Or can you handle most of the general homeserver/homelab stuff and just need the Minecraft specific bits?
@PM_ME_YOUR_REPO
Windows
Ugh, do we have to?

Ubuntu 24.04.01 is perfectly fine for this. That's the latest LTS.
