So I’m going to start off with a bit of information on my current situation. Since it can become very complex based on how WIDE I want this to be used for.
Basic Information:
Just upgraded my PC and plan on giving the old one to my older brother. And I went all out so I made sure this thing can do everything I need it to and more. As I do a lot of gaming, soft development, and am the dedicated server hoster for my friends anytime we play games. So this PC is made to be fighting for its life
Build:
AMD 9950X 16 core at base 4.30HZ
2x32gb= 64gb(will later upgrade to 128GB) of 6400MT DDR5 RAM
Operating System: Windows 11 Pro.
Solution and Questions:
Im planning on for this to be a long term solution where my Minecraft and other video game server are on one or multiple VMs. This is mostly because I can easily ensure that all server files and dependencies are installed and stored safely when i eventually have to reinstall Windows 11 because it bloats so much. So, all I have to do is redo my network settings and reinitialize the VMs.
1.
What Linux Distribution would be the best for this. I’m assuming Ubuntu but I wondered if there was any other forks that seem to be better for low utilization and for modding. As sometimes that happens.
2. Best server management platform/GUI. While I know I can most likely set up what I want myself. I wondered if there is a server platform that is best to manage multiple servers on. This is mostly to make my life easier as anytime a new update comes out I manually go get the new jar file and put it into the server. So even if it’s minor would be a massive upgrade for me.(I will be using modded servers and plugin vanilla ones based on the year)
3. Best Plugins.
This is mostly a generalized question on what do you believe are essentials never live with outs since you have found them.

1 and 2 conflict each other
a server terminal is objectively the best for server hosting of any kind. a gui will take resources away from your server hosting. ubuntu server is what I use, and if youre familiar with linux already then you should use that
[tmux](https://github.com/tmux/tmux/wiki) will be your "gui". it essentially lets you control as many shells as you want while working in only one terminal
as for automatically updating, you should write a script for it. it would depend on what games your hosting, and im not sure if youre using a public mod pack or not either
you can use cron to schedule when that script runs, IE when it checks for updates
3.
im new so I dont know lol
spark is really important but thats all I know
I hope this helps

a gui runs So little on resources that youd barely notice it
ptero on a 20+ server scale uses like 100mb ram

(panel wise)
the servers themselves are like 20gb allocated

im just parroting what my professor says at college about server hosts like for a webserver

lol
hes a bit out dated with how little it uses system resources

It’s good advice. But nearly everything is getting guis nowadays. Palatir foundry is a glorified gui for data centers and data science
cli is nice i do agree, but some people prefer gui (ME I DISLIKE CLI)
but im still going to use it
but im still going to use it
American ShorthairOP
But thank you for the advice. I’m going to be lurking as everyone else comes in to see their opinions since I know when you bring up distributions, guis, and other details like this people have their own little niche.
@Tamz i think an issue is that you want VM's within a windows machine
thats kinda rough
thats kinda rough
American ShorthairOP
It is. I would run it on Linux if I didn’t wanna play games with anticheat
I was thinking maybe docker could work. But even that runs heavy on windows
Tbf was the reason I got the 16 core
yeah
but
Vm's from windows is the hitter
im not sure what others will think but
i think a few would suggest just having a seperate system for server hosting / other stuff

@Ruddy Ground-Dove what do you think of this
Ruddy Ground-Dove
1. Ubuntu, NixOS, Talos, etc. Depends on your purposes.
2. Pterodactyl for now, Moonlight soon.
3. Mods >> Plugins

personally id just run it on my windows machinewhy again are you worried about bloat on it? you could just get a separate SSD for the servers and just unplug it when factory resetting
Ruddy Ground-Dove
Genuinely please do not use Windows for hosting servers.
Just use Linux, be smart about things.
If you want a hypervisor you can use Proxmox.
