I'm downloading a map, I'm wondering if there would be a way someone could embed malware into the map, or is any map legit (provided there isn't malware alongside it)

No, unless you do something profoundly stupid. A map should just be the map folder with .dat files and a bunch of region files. If there's an .exe, obviously don't run that.

Oh you could absolutely embed malware into a map. You’d need something a bit goofy to actually make it scary, but yeah you could do some silly malware things.
If you’re sketched out about it then use https://any.run to see if there is malware. Doubt it though.
