Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone was aware of a way to see more detailed connection info on forge servers? mainly about the packets being received by the client, one of my players is having a json issue happening when they're trying to connect and i'm trying to see if there is a way for me to see more info about what might be causing it

I'm not seeing any json errors related to client connection in either log. Can you provide an example of what the player is seeing? Or a log that contains the connection error?

sorry wrong error
it is this they see:

Internal Exception: io.netty.handler.codec.DecoderException:
com.google.gson.JsonSyntaxException:
com.google.gson.stream.MalformedJsonException: Use
JsonReader.setLenient(true) to accept malformed JSON at line 1 column. path $

@PM_ME_YOUR_REPO And this player is presumably not you, and you are presumably using the same modpack, and are not having an issue, correct?
Stilt SandpiperOP
yes exactly, i can connect without issue along with other players as far as I am aware

Found something that might be the issue. They're using Java 21, not 17. On Vanilla, using newer Java versions causes no issues, but on modded platforms, it frequently does. Have them downgrade their Java to 17 and test again.

 no matter how many times I've mentioned it they still don't change it, thank you! I hadn't spotted it, I will ask them to change it and try again
Stilt SandpiperOP
you're tell me haha thanks again, I'll report back what happens 👍
Please do. I'm curious.

just out of curiosity, where did you see the incorrect java version? I can't see any reference to 21, only 17

Only guessing at 21. It's the current LTS, so most folks that have Java installed, have 21. It could be any version higher than 17, but 18 - 20 were short lived, and 22 was pretty quickly superceded by 23. So it's MOST LIKELY 21 or 23.
Just the whole "compatibility mode" thing tips off that it's a newer version than 17.
You NEVER wanna see compatibility mode on a modded pack. I have actually never seen a case where it didn't cause a strange mystery issue.

ahhh ok gotcha, thank you

no, believe it or not it wasn't the issue, I have made sure they're running the correct java version, forge version, I have even deleted and reinstalled forge on the server along with all config files and it's still not working
