the server can have at most 10 people on at a time, but will usually have 3-6 people on. may have modpacks running and i may use it for other games such as palworld.
what kind of cpu would i need?
how much ram and what speed?

What's your budget? There are some very budget ways to get a homehosted system, but its very easy to get the CPU wrong.

Is a good guide at basic setup, but your budget will be a factor.

for cpu its better to get a cpu with good single core performance. and for ram requirments
if your just running vanilla then having 8gb on the server with 4 allocated should be fine
if you want mods then depending on the modpack you might want 8-12 gb allocated

eh, 4GB is pretty conservative for Java 1.21.X; I'd say like 6GB allocated to be comfortable, but if lower was a requirement, there are ways.

Palworld is a mem hog, would not have less than 16-32 gb memory for that game tbh

8 will work with reboots every 6 hours, but yes.
We don't fuck with Palworld at low mem.

i wouldnt consider that stable or smth i would want to do tho which is why i said 16 minimum

Oh for sure.

budget to midtier build then.
Guidelines:
1. sustained single core CPU performance is key. pick a Ryzen 5, 7 or 9 or Intel i5, i7, or i9, made within the last 5 years if possible. newer is better. core count doesn't really matter.
2. memory speed is largely irrelevant
3. aim for at least 16GB of memory, shit's cheap and you need room for the game and OS
4. get an SSD, and an NVMe SSD if possible

thanks
@Gończy Polski thanks
for sure. feel free to do some shopping around and bring exact builds here for review if you like.
the ONE thing though is do not go for an old CPU. if you're gonna fuck everything else up, do not fuck that up.

Are you ok buying used parts?
Facebook marketplace alone will let you demolish what you could get new in a not funny way.
We're talking a 3 or 4x improvement from shopping used.
