So me and a friend are trying to play on a server im hosting, I have my desktop connected to a subrouter and the server on a laptop connected to the router. Port forwarding seems to work and when I checked online it was working. When I try to connect to the server from my desktop there's no issue but my friend who is connecting from outside gets this error, any idea of what to do?
I'm hosting the server on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, it's version 1.21.4

it auto uploads it
but you seemed to have either 1 messed up the server side setup or 2 something client end connecting is wrong

my friends connection doesnt show up on the logs at all, I force closed the server after testing me logging in both with and without a vpn and waiting for the outside connection

Are you connecting to your internal IP, or an external IP when you're able to connect?
Is your friend connecting to the same IP?
If no connection is hitting the server, then something is not working as expected.
Is your friend possibly behind CGNAT, or possibly only have a IPv4 or IPv6 address, preventing connecting to your server?
A way to check that is can they ping the IP?

external IP
Yes it's the same IP
My friend has tried in two different locations (uni residence and at home) and neither worked
Havent checked if they can ping the IP

tried pinging and the ping request timed out

Can you ping it, from a site like ping.pe?
Little yellow antOP
got 100% loss
both on ping pe and on dnschecker
Polish
Okay, then that IP probably has ICMP firewalled (or it's a CGNAT IP and doesn't allow inbound traffic)
Little yellow antOP
probably can change that in the router config right?
Polish
If it's CGNAT, no, if it's hitting your router, yeah
Little yellow antOP
forums say my ISP does not use cgnat so I'm gonna try tweaking the router config when I can, thx
Polish
Nice, if your ISP doesn't use CGNAT, and port checking websites say the port is closed, I'd double check your port forwarding rules
Ensure they are for the right destination port, and are forwarded to the right machine and port where you're running the server
Then I'd double check you have a windows firewall rule allowing the connection that the server is running on
(if you run into issues with the Windows firewall, I'd maybe disable it briefly just to verify this is the cause)

Im running the server on linux so firewall shouldnt be a problem
still have to double check port forwarding
still have to double check port forwarding
