Hi everyone. I had been self-hosting (port-forwarding) a Minecraft server for my brother and I for a while and it worked like a charm. However, I am currently studying abroad and whenever we play, my brother can barely move and usually ends up being Timed out or Disconnected. I did think about renting a server somewhere between us (Tokyo or so) but I am not really willing to spend 10$+ for a server that can run modpacks like Raspberry Flavoured (80-ish mod, 1.19.2) smoothly, and we only play once or twice a month. I am not allowed to work off-campus, and any positions for on-campus are not available until next year.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestion/help with my current situation 🙇‍♂️

Uhh… well just about the cheapest good server that exists is exactly $10 a month.
There’s free solutions like OCI free tier and others, but they’re kinda garbage.
Giant pandaOP
yeah … i heard OCI isn’t really “loved” by many people
Ruddy Ground-Dove
Yep, it’s slow and free garbage.
Really if you want to have a dedicated server you should get used to spending money on it.
Giant pandaOP
Yeah I know, people always say “You get what you pay for”. I should just focus on my study, meet more people and gain more exp for a job on-campus

I mean is selfhosting tech a hobby for you?
Giant pandaOP
No, I do it just because I want to have some fun with my brother while we are 10km+ away from each other.
I am studying Software Engineering so I barely consider anything relating to computer/coding a hobby
Ruddy Ground-Dove
Welp, you have your answer to what to do then.
Just pay the money for a cheap server or deal with the lag, ig.
Giant pandaOP
or just set all of those aside and learn something new. i don’t know much about how to ACTUALLY set up a server (for other things), like filtering IPs, setting up a tunnel, firewall configurations, etc
anw, thank you so much for your help Aeon

Um what? You can definitely run a decent server for less than that. Although idk how intensive raspberry flavoured is

If you wanna downgrade to Xeons which I would NOT consider good, about $10 a month is the best you can do.
Y'know, without going into weird summerhost territory.

Sites like ultraservers, pebblehost, enviromc etc all have plans for ~ $1/gb
And I don't think they count as summerhosts
Ruddy Ground-Dove
I was talking about Enviro. $1/gb.
Chum salmon
Why do they need 10gb?
Ruddy Ground-Dove
Ah my bad, though they added $2 as a base.
I stand corrected.
Chum salmon
Although it does depend how ram hungry their modpack is
