Quick question, is Neoforge a direct replacement for forge? For example can I go from 1.20.1 forge to 1.21.x Neoforge once all mods have been updated etc?

NeoForge is a fork of Forge after the Lex Manos issues, assuming a mod upgrades from Forge 1.20.x -> NeoForge 1.21.x then yes it'll work.
But you probably wouldn't be able to do Forge 1.20.x -> Forge 1.21.x and just use it on NeoForge.
I recall conversation about it being a hardfork.

Got you, so as long as the mod goes to Neoforge then the main server jar can as well?
Thank you for your help!

Wait what?
Oh I might have read this badly.
Basically so long as the mod gets ported to NeoForge it's all gud.

Yeh sorry it’s probably the way I worded it 🤦♂️ I meant if the server is running forge can I drop in Neoforge once all mods have been updated to 1.21.x

Generally speaking don't do this. What you want to do is make a new server and port your old config and world in.

Gotcha, so clean slate and transfer world over 👍🏼
Thank you! Glad I asked now

Remember that most of the time NeoForge and Forge mods aren't cross compatible. Just because both modloaders exist for 1.21.x doesn't mean the mods can work on both.
Even though they're closely related.

Ok, thinking it might be worth just starting on Neoforge and waiting for the mods to update, I’m only thinking of Neoforge because I’ve heard it’s better for performance

NeoForge is comically better than Forge.
Although Fabric is better than both.
Stilt SandpiperOP
Oh really? So Fabric is more likely the way to go then
Ruddy Ground-Dove
Fabric is fantastic, yes.

Ahhh ok, glad I came here then, I was under the impression that neoforge was the best

It’s the best for tech mods. Fabric is a better platform generally however.
Stilt SandpiperOP
Right ok, seems like I have a choice to make then 🤦♂️😂 thanks for your help!

I mean, fabric has always existed, but not all mods end up getting a fabric port.
At the end of the day, fabric, forge and neoforge are all just mod loaders. There's no real hard proof that base (neo)forge performs worse than fabric. Most fabric performance optimizations have a (neo)forge port under another name (sodium -> embeddium, lithium has an official neoforge port, iris -> oculus)

the only difference between fabric and forge is that fabric doesn't have an extensive event bus and the API is separate from the loader. Everything with fabric almost requires mixins, vs forge where you can do a lot with just the event bus itself
